Tokenized Equities
Market Hours and Price Discovery
A blockchain can accept instructions while a referenced security market, bank payment system or conversion desk follows another schedule. Continuous technical transfer capability therefore does not establish continuous liquidity, current reference prices or completed external settlement. BIS's arrangement framework helps locate the institutions and rules behind a digital representation. BIS
What you will learn
- Separate network availability from reference-market availability.
- Explain why a live token quote can contain stale or uncertain inputs.
- Evaluate executable depth and timing instead of a continuous-price badge.

A clock does not identify a market

An original stock price, a token market quote and an intermediary's valuation can differ. Investor.gov explains that stocks carry price risk; it does not provide a universal real-time price or market for a stock-linked token. SEC: Stocks
Worked example: a closed reference market
Assume fictional Elm shares last traded at 80 before their reference venue closed. The token market remains open and quotes 79 bid, 83 ask. A dashboard repeats the last share price as if it were current and labels the token “priced at 80.”
For a one-unit immediate sale in this teaching scenario, the displayed executable bid is 79 if its conditions hold. Buying is associated with the ask 83. The last 80 trade is a historical observation, not a simultaneous guaranteed conversion. The bid/ask midpoint of 81 is a calculation, not proof that either side will execute there.
Now imagine significant news arrives while the reference market remains closed. A market maker may widen its quotes because hedging or inventory valuation is uncertain. That is a proposed mechanism to investigate, not a report about a named venue. A continuous chart does not reveal how much inventory is available or whether the issuer will convert at the reference value.
Reference venue: last observed price 80 at time A
Token venue: bid 79 / ask 83 at time B
Conversion service: separate open/closed and eligibility state
Research output: show source, timestamp, size and route for each number
Define an honest availability claim
A useful statement specifies instruction availability, trading availability, executable quantity, conversion availability and settlement completion. A route can be open for quotes but unavailable for redemption. An order can be accepted but remain unmatched. The relevant evidence is narrower than “24/7” unless each promised function is actually supported.
For price discovery, ask how reference inputs are obtained, their age, who can change them, and what happens during a halt or outage. A signed price still needs freshness and scope checks. A stable displayed value can be a stale field rather than evidence of low volatility.
If a product advertises arbitrage, identify who is allowed to perform the conversion, minimums, costs, time and capital requirements. A price difference does not prove every retail holder can capture it. Without the actual route, it is a spread between observations, not a guaranteed profit opportunity.
Common misconceptions
“The chain runs, so the underlying market is open.” Different systems can have different hours.
“The midpoint is my execution price.” A calculation is not a standing executable offer.
“Any deviation must disappear instantly.” Conversion barriers and uncertainty can persist.
Risks and limits
No current exchange hours, order book or trading recommendation is supplied. Actual venues can change schedules and halt trading. Token pricing also depends on instrument rights and counterparties. All windows and quotes are hypothetical, and no live market, hedge or arbitrage was tested.
Exercise and answer
Exercise: A last share trade is 80, token bid 79 and ask 83. May a holder assume an immediate whole-position sale at 80 or at the midpoint 81?
Answer: No. Only an available bid for the actual position size and conditions is a stated sale route. Historical reference and midpoint calculations do not establish execution.
