How to Evaluate an RWA Product

Apply a repeatable evidence checklist to rights, cash flows, counterparties and exits.

What you will learn

  • Create a rights and risk map
  • Record verified claims and unresolved unknowns

AI-assisted manuscript. The sample assessment is fictional and provides no investment recommendation.

Learning objectives

  • Build a rights, cash-flow, counterparty and exit map.
  • Link each material claim to dated primary evidence.
  • Record uncertainty without turning missing data into a favorable score.

Ask five questions before judging a rate

What economic exposure exists? What rights does the holder receive? Who holds assets and owes performance? How do transactions settle? What happens if a critical participant fails? These questions organize research across different structures without assuming that every token gives the same claim.

The BIS arrangement framework supports connecting assets, representations and governance. SEC education distinguishes stocks, bonds and fund interests, and the 2026 SEC staff tokenized-securities statement highlights that third-party models can differ from direct issuer relationships. The staff statement has no independent legal force. BIS, SEC staff statement

An evaluation is a set of evidenced conclusions, not a collection of reassuring labels.

Worked example: a product with a complete chart and missing rights

Imagine a fictional page advertises “100% asset-backed, 6% yield, instant liquidity.” Available evidence includes a token balance chart and an official-looking portfolio report dated two months earlier. No current instrument terms, redemption procedure or residency policy can be found.

The chart supports a claim about the displayed token data only after its method is checked. The portfolio report supports what its scope and date actually cover. Neither establishes the holder's precise entitlement, a current net yield or an immediate exit for a specified amount.

A responsible assessment might say: “A dated portfolio statement was observed; current holder rights, investor eligibility and executable exits remain unverified.” It should not fill unknown fields with “yes,” zero fees or the advertised 6%. Nor should it assign a high numerical safety score because no adverse information was found.

Claim → primary document/version → passage → scope/date/jurisdiction
       → interpretation → verified fact / inference / unknown
→ affected right or risk → next review action

Suppose a later fee schedule establishes a 0.5% subscription charge. For an assumed contribution of 1,000 deducted under those terms, investable cash would be 995. That arithmetic still does not verify the yield claim. Each conclusion needs its own evidence.

Make comparison reproducible

Keep instrument category, issuer, obligor, custody, governing documents, income source, valuation, costs, transfer, redemption, residency and failure treatment as separate fields. Record the source's effective date and the date it was retrieved. Identify whether evidence is official documentation, an independent report or a direct test, and do not upgrade one into another.

When comparing products, align currency, fee layers, time periods and investor assumptions. A distribution rate, a portfolio yield and a total return are not interchangeable. A right that exists for one investor class may not exist for another. Do not infer residency access from a card network logo, language selector or successful website visit.

Prioritize material unknowns. A missing logo is cosmetic; an unknown obligor or redemption right can change the whole analysis. Define a review owner and update trigger for changing terms. If a source becomes stale or a material contradiction appears, mark the assessment as needing update rather than leave an assurance badge unchanged.

Common misconceptions

“No bad news means low risk.” Missing evidence is not favorable evidence.

“Official documents mean directly tested.” Reading terms is different from completing custody, trading or redemption.

“One score can summarize every structure.” Scores can hide incomparable rights and unknowns unless the method is explicit and justified.

Risks and limits

This method is education, not personalized advice or a legal, tax or security opinion. It cannot eliminate fraud or future failure. Named-product conclusions require current primary evidence and the relevant jurisdiction. An analyst should stop a definitive claim when material evidence is missing.

Exercise and answer

Exercise: Can a two-month-old portfolio report establish current instant liquidity and a 6% net investor return?

Answer: No. Current exit evidence, terms, fees, calculation method and investor scope are missing. State exactly what the report proves and keep the other claims unresolved.

Use Research and the asset-rights lab to apply the framework. Continue in the AI phase to examine assisted research without losing evidence discipline.

Does a two-month-old portfolio report prove current instant liquidity and 6% net return?

Your answer stays in this tab. No account or persistent completion record is created.
