Stablecoin Payments & Crypto Cards

Cashback and Rewards

A reward needs a qualifying transaction base, rate, cap, settlement asset, timing and conditions. Refunds, excluded merchant categories, account status or a tier requirement can change what is payable. These are questions to check in the actual agreement, not conditions assumed for every card.

What you will learn

  • Calculate rewards using eligibility, caps and settlement conditions.
  • Separate a fiat cash receipt from a volatile reward asset.
  • Compare benefits with costs without treating unknown rewards as certain.

Learning objectives

  • Calculate rewards using eligibility, caps and settlement conditions.
  • Separate a fiat cash receipt from a volatile reward asset.
  • Compare benefits with costs without treating unknown rewards as certain.

A percentage is only one term

A reward needs a qualifying transaction base, rate, cap, settlement asset, timing and conditions. Refunds, excluded merchant categories, account status or a tier requirement can change what is payable. These are questions to check in the actual agreement, not conditions assumed for every card.

Coinbase's captured rewards page describes a changing app offer. The research evidence did not obtain an individual user's current percentage, cap or realized payout. The correct conclusion is that the offer mechanism was documented, not that a remembered headline rate applies universally. Coinbase rewards

The associated fee page also distinguishes crypto-sale spread from card issuer fees. A reward cannot be judged without the route's separate costs. Coinbase fees

Worked example: the cap binds before the headline

Imagine a fictional reward rule pays 2% on qualifying purchases, with a 10-unit monthly cap in the same currency as spending. A customer spends 1,000, but only 600 qualifies. The uncapped reward is 600 × 2% = 12; the capped result is 10. Applying 2% to all 1,000 would incorrectly suggest 20.

Assume a 100 qualifying purchase is then refunded before final calculation. The qualifying base becomes 500, whose 2% is also 10. A second 100 refund reduces it to 400 and the result to 8. The cap does not mean the customer always receives 10.

Now replace the hypothetical cash reward with a volatile asset. Ten reward units are not necessarily ten units of spendable fiat. Their value may change before conversion, and sale costs or access limits can apply. An educational fiat-cost calculator should not silently use an assumed future token value to offset certain expenses.

Total purchases → remove excluded/refunded amounts → qualifying base
→ apply actual rate → apply cap → check settlement and conditions
→ cash received OR separately valued reward asset

Include the price of qualifying

A tier can require a subscription, lockup or balance. Determine the actual condition before analyzing opportunity cost, price risk or access to the committed asset. Do not invent a staking return or a lockup amount from a marketing badge. If a condition is unknown, the reward should remain conditional in the comparison.

For a purely hypothetical cash case, a received 10 reward and a known 3 monthly fee leave 7 before other costs. That is not a guaranteed net saving if conversion, funding or other applicable charges are unknown. A useful output can show “known fee 3; conditional reward up to 10 under these assumptions; remaining costs unverified.”

Evidence should distinguish advertised maximum, documented applicable rule, observed payout and continued future availability. A single payout does not prove the offer will remain unchanged. Keep the date, region, tier, selected asset and excluded transactions attached to the claim.

Common misconceptions

“Up to 5% means every transaction earns 5%.” The maximum needs its actual qualifying terms.

“Reward tokens equal cash saved.” Quantity, market value, conversion and timing are different facts.

“A cap is a minimum payment.” It is an upper limit under the stated calculation, not a guaranteed entitlement.

Risks and limits

No current rate, reward valuation, account eligibility or tax result is asserted. The source supports one provider's offer mechanism, not a universal industry promise. All numerical rules and refund handling are fictional teaching assumptions. No app offer, purchase, refund, stake or payout was directly tested.

Exercise and answer

Exercise: Qualifying spend is 400, the assumed rate is 2% and cap 10. Is the reward 8, 10 or 20? Can it be counted as certain fiat if paid in an unpriced asset?

Answer: The rule yields 8 reward units. It cannot be treated as certain fiat without an evidenced valuation and realization path; the cap does not lift it to 10.
