Tokenized Gold
Separate gold quantity, custody and holder rights, then test delivery minimums and executable exits.
What you will learn
- Separate inventory, custody and holder claim
- Calculate delivery eligibility under explicit terms
Editorial status: PUBLISHED. AI-assisted educational material; user batch approval recorded on 2026-10-19. Gold quantities, custody rules and prices are fictional, not descriptions of a commercial token.
Learning objectives
- Separate metal identity, custody evidence and the holder's claim.
- Calculate redemption eligibility under explicit teaching assumptions.
- Compare a reference metal value with realizable cash or delivery.
Gold backing is the start of the inquiry
A gold-linked token might represent a specified property interest, a contractual delivery claim, an interest in a vehicle or price exposure. Determine the actual arrangement rather than infer direct bullion ownership from a gold image. BIS's tokenization framework connects the underlying asset, digital representation and governing rules. For physical-metal research, record quantity, purity, identifiable stock where applicable, holder allocation, custodian, liabilities, verification date and delivery procedure. These are evidence questions, not a claim that every product uses allocated bars or gives every holder a right to a particular bar.
The CFTC and FINRA's metals education draws attention to spreads, commissions and physical holding costs such as storage and insurance. Its U.S. consumer scope does not determine the legal rights of every gold token. CFTC: Metals education
Worked example: metal value without a small-holder exit
Imagine a fictional arrangement has 100 ounces recorded in custody and issues 1,000 units, each described by its assumed documents as a claim involving 0.1 ounce. A holder has 20 units, corresponding to 2 ounces under those terms. The reference gold price is an invented 2,000 currency units per ounce, giving a reference metal amount of 4,000.
Assume physical redemption requires at least 10 ounces, with shipping and processing charged separately. The holder's 2 ounces do not meet that minimum. The screen's 4,000 reference does not prove immediate delivery or a 4,000 cash payment. A secondary buyer might offer 3,900, or no buyer may be available. Each exit needs its own evidence.
Now suppose a custody report lists 100 ounces but does not explain whether liabilities or competing claims exist. Dividing metal quantity by token supply establishes a ratio under the report, not enforceable segregation or the holder's priority. A legal review and the actual custody agreement address different questions from a physical stock count.
Metal inventory → identity/quantity evidence → custody arrangement
↓
Holder's unit → documented claim → sale / redemption / delivery conditions
Reference price × quantity ≠ guaranteed proceeds or immediate possession
Trace the complete delivery process
Ask who can request redemption, what identity checks apply, minimums, locations, fees, taxes, shipping, insurance during transit and when the token is canceled. Do not assume burning a token proves successful physical delivery. Preserve a shipment or unresolved claim if delivery fails under the stated process.
Evidence levels matter. Reading an official stock report is documentation verification, not inspection of a vault or assay. A provider's insurance statement is not the same as a policy establishing the holder as beneficiary for every loss. Unknown exclusions and payout priority remain unknown.
Use a dated comparison that separates metal exposure, expenses, issuer risk, custody risk and exit constraints. A gold price can rise while fees, a discount or a blocked redemption prevent the holder from realizing the same gain.
Common misconceptions
“A token balance is possession of a gold bar.” The documents determine what the balance represents.
“Metal exists, so redemption is unconditional.” Minimums, eligibility and delivery conditions can matter.
“A reserve ratio proves all legal protections.” Quantity evidence does not settle liabilities, segregation or priority.
Risks and limits
No real metal quantity, price, reserve, insurance or issuer eligibility is asserted. Applicable property, securities, tax and insolvency law require qualified review. This lesson's arithmetic explains a mechanism, not the quality of a commercial token. No vault, bar, shipping route or redemption was directly tested.
Exercise and answer
Exercise: A holder's 20 units correspond to 2 ounces, but physical redemption requires 10. Does a 4,000 reference value establish immediate delivery or cash?
Answer: No. The holder does not satisfy the assumed delivery minimum, and reference value is not an executable sale or redemption promise. Verify a separate exit path.
