Commodities & Derivatives

Physical Commodities

A commodity analysis needs a specified thing: type, quantity, quality, location and relevant delivery terms. Two records with the same market label need not describe interchangeable physical items. For a token linked to goods, ask what the holder can require and which records connect that claim to the stock.

What you will learn

  • Identify a physical commodity beyond its price label.
  • Separate quantity, quality, location and ownership evidence.
  • Trace storage and delivery responsibilities through a token representation.

Learning objectives

  • Identify a physical commodity beyond its price label.
  • Separate quantity, quality, location and ownership evidence.
  • Trace storage and delivery responsibilities through a token representation.

Physical identity is part of the asset

A commodity analysis needs a specified thing: type, quantity, quality, location and relevant delivery terms. Two records with the same market label need not describe interchangeable physical items. For a token linked to goods, ask what the holder can require and which records connect that claim to the stock.

BIS's tokenization framework distinguishes the underlying asset, its representation and the governing platform rules. The representation is not an independent inspection of the asset. BIS

For physical metals specifically, CFTC/FINRA education highlights the spot reference, dealer premium or spread and costs including storage and insurance. Its U.S. educational scope is not a legal classification of all commodities or tokens. CFTC: Metals advisory

Worked example: equal quantities, different deliverability

Imagine a fictional warehouse holds lot A of 100 metal units meeting teaching grade G, and lot B of 100 units of grade H. A contract promises delivery of grade G at the specified warehouse. A total inventory report says “200 metal units,” but only 100 meet the stated grade requirement.

If 150 claims each promise one grade-G unit under this hypothetical arrangement, the total count of 200 does not establish sufficient deliverable stock. The apparent surplus masks a 50-unit shortfall for the actual promised specification. This arithmetic does not determine priority between holders or legal remedies.

Now suppose lot A is moved to another location. The quantity remains 100, while transport, access and the contract's delivery location may change. An unchanged token supply cannot reveal whether those obligations remain satisfied.

Physical lot → identity + quantity + quality + location evidence
                              ↓
Custody/warehouse terms → holder's specified claim → delivery process
Token count alone does not verify the promised specification.

Evidence must follow the item

Record the inventory identifier, measurement method, report date, responsible inspector and exclusions. An asset report can be sampled or limited. A certificate needs to correspond to the item actually held, not merely a similar item or copied identifier.

Separate direct ownership, a warehouse claim, a vehicle interest and a price contract. A receipt can have a particular contractual meaning, but the analyst must inspect it rather than assume it transfers title. Custodian identity, competing claims, liens, insurance and insolvency treatment require additional evidence and qualified review where appropriate.

Costs also follow the physical route. Storage, insurance, handling, transport, tax and delivery minimums may change realized outcomes. Do not use a price chart as if it includes all those services. A holder may have exposure to a metal price without a practical route to receive a small physical quantity.

Common misconceptions

“The total inventory number proves every promise.” The promised grade, location and rights matter.

“A token verifies quality.” A ledger records assertions and transfers; inspection is a separate process.

“An insurance label covers every loss for every holder.” Policy scope, exclusions and beneficiaries require evidence.

Risks and limits

No warehouse, certificate, legal title or insurance is verified here. The grade labels and shortfall are invented. Commodity characteristics differ, so a metals-cost source must not be treated as a complete legal or operational guide for energy or agricultural goods. No storage, assay or physical delivery was tested.

Exercise and answer

Exercise: One hundred grade-G units and one hundred grade-H units support 150 promises of grade G. Does the total 200 prove sufficient grade-G delivery stock?

Answer: No. Only 100 meet the assumed specification, leaving a 50-unit gap before considering any other rights or obligations. Preserve the specification instead of adding unlike goods.
