Commodities & Derivatives

Onchain Commodity Markets

A product referencing a commodity can represent physical ownership, a delivery claim, a fund share, a future or a perpetual contract. The relevant rights, payment obligations and failure risks differ even when all interfaces display the same commodity chart. BIS's arrangement framework connects each representation to its actual asset and governing rules. BIS

What you will learn

  • Compare physical claims, fund interests and derivative exposure on one stated question.
  • Separate capital posted from notional economic exposure.
  • Produce a rights, costs, settlement and failure comparison report.

Learning objectives

  • Compare physical claims, fund interests and derivative exposure on one stated question.
  • Separate capital posted from notional economic exposure.
  • Produce a rights, costs, settlement and failure comparison report.

The chain does not choose the instrument

A product referencing a commodity can represent physical ownership, a delivery claim, a fund share, a future or a perpetual contract. The relevant rights, payment obligations and failure risks differ even when all interfaces display the same commodity chart. BIS's arrangement framework connects each representation to its actual asset and governing rules. BIS

CFTC education distinguishes futures obligations and contract-dependent physical or cash settlement. It also explains that margin supports performance, not purchase of the underlying goods. CFTC: Futures basics, CFTC: Futures mechanics

Worked example: an apparently larger derivative return

Imagine one unit of a fictional commodity has a reference value of 100. Route P pays 100 for a specified physical interest. Route D posts an assumed 20 margin for a linear contract with 100 notional exposure. Ignore all costs and funding for this isolated example.

If the reference rises to 110, both have an isolated price change of +10 under their assumed formulas. Relative to P's 100 purchase, that is 10%. Relative to D's 20 margin, it is 50%. D did not create five times the underlying price gain; it used a different capital denominator and carries its contract's margin and failure obligations.

If the reference falls instead, the smaller margin buffer can be consumed more quickly. The displayed percentage must therefore state whether its base is purchase cost, margin, NAV or notional. A leverage comparison without the loss path is incomplete.

Physical route → specified asset/custody/delivery claim
Fund route → portfolio + liabilities + share terms
Derivative route → reference formula + margin + counterparty + settlement
Compare: rights, exposure, posted capital, costs, exit and failure.

Complete the commodity exposure report

For each route, state the reference asset, units, quality or index specification, issuer or obligor, custody, holder right and governing document. Record whether physical delivery exists, who qualifies, minimums, costs and where it occurs. A delivery symbol on a page is not proof that the reader can redeem.

For derivatives, record multiplier, currency, expiry if any, settlement reference, margin, funding where relevant, closeout and operational dependencies. Do not apply a linear example to an inverse contract without its units and formula. An oracle reports a value; it does not inspect inventory or establish legal title.

Settlement analysis should identify the boundary. A token swap may complete atomically while a warehouse delivery or bank redemption remains external. PFMI provides separate principles for legal basis, settlement money, finality and linked obligations; citing it does not certify a product. BIS: PFMI

The completed report should distinguish all six requested forms: physical gold ownership, a warehouse receipt, a gold ETF interest, commodity futures, synthetic price exposure and a perpetual contract. Unknown rights stay unknown for each form. ETF shares are a portfolio-interest layer, not separately disposable direct holdings in each constituent. SEC: ETF

Use dated primary evidence, separate provider assertions from independent verification and preserve unknowns. A completed paper comparison is an educational outcome, not evidence of actual commodity purchases or account eligibility.

Common misconceptions

“Onchain commodity means physical commodity ownership.” The instrument can be a separate claim or derivative.

“A 50% margin return beats a 10% asset return on equal risk.” Denominators and obligations differ.

“Atomic tokens prove physical delivery.” The external asset process may remain outside the transaction.

Risks and limits

No current market size, investment ranking, expected return or platform permission is supplied. The example omits fees, price gaps, funding, tax and changing margin. A real product comparison requires its own contracts and relevant jurisdiction. No trade, vault, fund, derivative or delivery was tested.

Exercise and answer

Exercise: Both routes gain 10 on 100 notional, but one uses 20 margin. Does its 50% margin-based result mean the commodity rose 50%?

Answer: No. The commodity reference rose 10%; the 50% uses the smaller margin denominator. The contract's risk and liquidity requirements must be assessed separately.
