Mapping the RWA Ecosystem
Organize participants by economic role and rights rather than token marketing labels.
What you will learn
- Classify financial structures
- Map service providers and dependencies
AI-assisted manuscript. The map is a research method, not a ranking or list of verified providers.
Learning objectives
- Classify arrangements by economic role and holder rights.
- Map dependencies across issuance, custody, data and settlement.
- Avoid counting the same exposure several times.
Start with functions and claims
An ecosystem map should explain who does what and who owes what. A list of logos can hide the fact that several products depend on one custodian or reference the same asset. The BIS's tokenization framework connects assets, digital representations and programmable governance; use all three layers when deciding where an entity belongs. BIS
At the instrument layer, distinguish securities, commodity-related claims, synthetic exposure, derivatives, digital money, payment services and infrastructure. These are analytical categories that may overlap. A fund share, a direct bond and a stock-linked contract should not be pooled solely because each uses a token. SEC education distinguishes bonds, stocks and funds, while its 2026 staff statement discusses differences between issuer-sponsored and third-party tokenized securities. SEC: Tokenized Securities
The staff statement is U.S. analysis without independent legal force, not a global classification rule.
Worked example: three products, one shared dependency
Imagine three fictional offerings: A issues fund shares backed by a debt portfolio; B issues a contract referencing those shares; C provides a payment interface that accepts proceeds from selling B. Their brands are different, but B depends on A's performance, and C depends on a conversion route for B. Counting three brands as three independent asset pools would overstate diversity.
Suppose A reports 10 million of portfolio assets, and B reports 2 million of exposure to A. Adding them as 12 million of distinct underlying debt double-counts the 2 million if it is already part of A's portfolio. The appropriate measure depends on the research question: gross issued claims can include both layers, while distinct underlying assets require a look-through method. Label the metric before calculating it.
Underlying debt → A: fund interests → B: linked contract → C: payment use

└──── shared custody / data / conversion dependencies
A different example is a collectible-card vault receipt. Its research questions concern the specified physical item, authenticity evidence, custody and delivery rights. A payment card concerns spending, funding, conversion and issuer obligations. The shared word “card” is not a shared financial structure.
Add the operating roles
Map issuer, asset originator, custodian, registrar, administrator, identity provider, oracle, venue and payment mechanism. An entity may have more than one role; identify the actual legal entity, not just a group brand. A software supplier is not automatically the obligor behind an investment payment.
Show edges as dependencies with an explanation. “Uses” is too vague: does the system depend on a price feed, hold an asset, owe a payment or use a register as authoritative? The failure of each edge has a different consequence. Mark unknown relationships rather than infer partnerships from a logo.
For a dated research snapshot, record inclusion rules, excluded categories, source dates and aggregation methods. A provider's announcement is evidence of an announcement, not proof of operational adoption or assets under management. Separate pilot, available product and observed use.
Common misconceptions
“More logos mean more diversification.” Common obligors and service providers can connect apparently separate products.
“Every tokenized dollar is a distinct underlying dollar.” Nested claims can produce multiple records of one economic exposure.
“A taxonomy is a legal opinion.” Research categories do not decide regulatory treatment.
Risks and limits
This map is conceptual and contains no verified market totals. Classification can change with instrument terms and jurisdiction. Sources must be current enough for the stated snapshot, and conflicting provider definitions need reconciliation rather than silent addition. A map can reveal dependencies without proving their reliability.
Exercise and answer
Exercise: A has 10 million of portfolio assets and B references 2 million of A's shares. Is 12 million a valid count of distinct underlying assets?
Answer: Not without adjustment. It can double-count the same exposure. State whether the metric counts issued claims or distinct look-through assets and apply a consistent method.
