Collectible cards
Collectible cards: identity, physical rights and redemption
Separate a certificate match, physical ownership statements, IP licenses, custody, insurance and redemption conditions when evaluating token-linked collectible cards.
Official-document review only. No direct product test was performed. For education and research. Not investment, legal, or tax advice.
Questions to take to the evidence
- Identity and item link
- Not independently verified
- No specific card, image, print run, language, variant or token-to-item link was inspected.
- Grading and certificate
- Lookup returns information associated with a certificate. PSA does not inspect a seller listing through that lookup, and counterfeiters may copy genuine certificate numbers.
- Authenticity of the presented physical card
- Ownership
- Vault receipt
- Unencumbered title
- Token-to-card linkage
- Any particular physical card or listing was not examined
- Physical property rights
- The supplemental agreement states that each NFT represents and conveys ownership of an individual physical Asset, owned by the then-current corresponding NFT owner.
- Independent legal determination of title in all jurisdictions
- Bankruptcy remoteness
- No liens
- Actual existence/identity of a specific stored item
- Independent enforceability
- Segregation and lien analysis
- Item-level inventory evidence
- Artwork / IP license
- The agreement separates the physical Asset ownership statement from licensed Artwork/Brand rights; physical ownership does not transfer those intellectual-property rights.
- Ownership of all artwork, branding or commercial reproduction rights
- Rights in any third-party intellectual property
- Custody and segregation
- Not independently verified
- Current facility, item-level inventory, liens, subcustody and bankruptcy treatment were not independently verified.
- Insurance terms
- The terms state fair-market-value insurance for assets and separately restrict damage liability using gross-negligence/willful-misconduct language.
- Full policy coverage
- Every holder is the insured loss payee
- All losses paid in full
- Absence of deductibles or exclusions
- Full current insurance policy
- Coverage limits/exclusions/deductible
- Claim beneficiary and claims performance
- Redemption restrictions
- Redemption requires identity/eligibility/NFT-holder checks and fulfillment of applicable shipping, tax and handling obligations. The process describes burning in connection with delivery, not obtaining shipment by sending an NFT to a null address.
- Permissionless instant physical redemption
- Zero redemption cost
- Availability to every jurisdiction
- Current item/user-specific costs
- Delivery availability
- Actual delivery performance
- Liquidity and exit costs
- The captured supplement states a 6% Courtyard fee for the Vending Machine Buyback Offer and no Courtyard Fee for standard marketplace transactions.
- No current executable bid, spread, depth or all-in exit cost was verified.

Learning objectives
After this lesson, a learner should be able to separate certificate information from the identity of a physical card; distinguish a provider's contract statement about ownership from an independent legal finding; and identify the missing custody, insurance and redemption information before treating a token as a reliable route to an item. The objective is a better verification process, not an investment recommendation or a purchase button.
“Card” here means a physical collectible such as a sports or trading card. It does not mean a debit, credit or stablecoin payment card. A collectible token can have an asset-related financial structure; a payment card is a service for making payments. The shared word is not a reason to place them in one product category.
1. Establish which object is being discussed
An identity record needs more than a character or athlete name. Relevant descriptors include set, year, language, card number, print or parallel variant, grader, grade, certificate identifier and images of the actual slab or card. A similar-looking copy, another language edition or a different variant is not necessarily the same object. A reference price for one card should not silently become a valuation of another.
PSA's certificate-verification page explains a specific limitation: database lookup is not inspection of an online seller's physical item, and counterfeiters can copy valid certificate numbers. A successful lookup therefore supports a narrow statement about the database record. It does not by itself authenticate the seller's object, identify its owner, place it in a vault or link it to an NFT. PSA certificate verification.
This distinction determines the first failure state in the teaching lab. If the certificate's descriptive information and the displayed item differ, the learner must stop the identity conclusion and investigate the version, images and label. Completing another checkbox cannot repair a mismatch. Even when the information appears consistent, the lab should say “information matches in this fictional scenario,” not “a real card has been authenticated.”
2. A grade guarantee is a particular contract
The PSA authenticity and grade guarantee has eligibility, remedy and exclusion conditions. The captured terms require qualifying current-owner and certificate/proof conditions, provide remedy/valuation discretion, and state caps including USD 250,000 for a card and USD 500,000 over a person's lifetime. It is not a promise of an investment return or an all-risk insurance policy. The captured exclusions include circumstances involving the original submitter, opened or fake holders/labels, certain clerical errors, environmental damage, and loss, theft or damage. PSA guarantee terms.
These limits should not be treated as a prediction about a particular claim. This project has not submitted a claim, verified claimant eligibility or observed a payout. The useful learning outcome is to read the contract's covered event, eligible claimant, remedy, cap and exclusions separately. A “graded” badge cannot substitute for that analysis, and a guarantee about authenticity or grade does not establish unencumbered ownership.
3. Do not assume every NFT has the same right
An educational comparison can include three deliberately different fictional arrangements: direct ownership of a specified physical item; a contractual claim for retrieval from a named custodian; and an agreement that only pays an amount linked to a reference price. These scenario rights follow the supplied teaching documents, not the visual appearance of the token. A token standard alone cannot decide which arrangement applies.
Real documents can support a more specific statement. Courtyard's supplemental NFT Terms & Asset Management Services Agreement says that each NFT represents and conveys ownership of an individual physical Asset and describes that Asset as owned by the current corresponding NFT owner. It would misrepresent this document to call Courtyard merely a synthetic-price product or to claim that its contract promises no physical ownership. The accurate finding is that its contract states a physical-asset ownership relationship. Whether that statement is enforceable in a particular jurisdiction, how it interacts with liens or insolvency and whether a particular stored item exists remain separate questions not independently resolved by this lesson. Courtyard supplemental agreement.
The same document distinguishes physical Asset rights from the licensed Artwork/Brand rights. Ownership of an item does not automatically give the holder every intellectual-property or commercial reproduction right. This matters for collectible cards bearing third-party images and brands: a physical-item conclusion cannot be expanded into an unrestricted rights claim.
4. A custody service needs more than a token count
Courtyard's service terms describe asset-management services for the current NFT holder and contract-assumption/novation requirements when the NFT changes hands. The supplemental agreement also requires a transferee to assume the relevant contract. A transfer is therefore not evidence that every contractual condition disappears. Service terms, sections 5.1 and 5.4–5.5, supplemental agreement.
For a specific item, a researcher still needs evidence connecting its identifier and certificate to inventory held by the actual current custodian. Important unresolved questions include segregation, reconciliation, transfer to another storage provider, liens, access during a dispute and recovery if a participant fails. A token balance, a warehouse photograph or a database entry is not a substitute for all those facts.
The captured redemption page contains older logistics wording, including a named custody reference and “once available” language. The Analysis reader flagged it as insufficient to establish the current vault or full insurance arrangement. This lesson uses it for mechanism limitations, not to certify a current facility. A source can be official and still require a freshness qualification. Redemption and shipping.
5. Separate insurance, liability and the actual claim
Courtyard's terms state a fair-market-value insurance commitment and separately use gross-negligence/willful-misconduct language for damage liability. The complete current policy, deductible, coverage limit, exclusions, loss payee and claim handling were not obtained. “Insurance is mentioned in the terms” is consequently a defensible statement; “every holder is fully reimbursed for every loss” is not. Service terms, section 5.3.
In the lab, the insurance field should display both the stated commitment and missing policy details. It should never turn an unread policy into a green “fully protected” result. Insurance, contractual liability, authenticity remedies and ownership are four different questions, even if one provider discusses all of them on related pages.
6. Redemption is an operational and contractual path
The captured Courtyard terms require identity, eligibility and NFT-holder checks, together with applicable shipping, tax and handling obligations. The delivery/redemption process includes burning at its defined stage; independently sending a token to a null address is not the documented way to request shipment. The existence of a burn function therefore does not prove permissionless or free physical delivery. Service terms, sections 5.6–5.7, redemption process.
Fees also require exact scope. The captured supplemental agreement specifies a 6% Courtyard fee for the Vending Machine Buyback Offer and no Courtyard Fee for standard marketplace transactions. That cannot be simplified into “all trades cost 6%” or “all transactions have no cost.” Network, third-party, shipping, handling and tax costs need their own evidence. No all-in redemption quote or realized marketplace liquidity was verified. Supplemental agreement, Courtyard Fee.
Worked teaching scenario
The lab uses RWA EDU Demo Card, certificate DEMO-NOT-VALID, and fictional documents. It is not a listed product, a sale offer or a verified item. In one scenario, the certificate information matches, but the custody evidence is missing and the document grants only a retrieval claim. The learner is asked whether the certificate proves direct physical title. The correct response is no: matching identity information does not establish ownership or performance of a separate custody obligation.
Now switch to a fictional scenario whose contract expressly assigns physical title. The right lesson is not that ownership can never accompany a token. It is that the claim follows that document and still leaves identity, custody, legal enforceability and delivery to be checked separately. A third scenario supplies only price exposure, with no physical-delivery promise. The learner must use the actual scenario terms rather than assume a universal NFT meaning.
Injecting a certificate mismatch should stop the identity conclusion. Injecting missing custody leaves identity information visible while custody stays unknown. Injecting paused redemption explains why the ability to transfer a token does not imply immediate physical retrieval. An incorrect answer can be revised; reset clears every answer, check and injected failure. The lab performs no wallet connection, certificate API query, transaction or collection of personal documents.
Assessment and source boundaries
Question: a certificate lookup matches a genuine database record, and an NFT balance is visible. What remains to establish before asserting a redeemable ownership position? Answer: the physical item match, the applicable rights agreement, the token-to-item relationship, current custody evidence and the holder's redemption conditions. Insurance and price/liquidity require additional separate checks. A price chart and a certificate badge cannot close those gaps.
The lesson's case statements are based on the official documents captured by the Analysis role on 2026-10-18. Provider commitments are described as commitments; no independent legal title ruling, complete policy review, physical authentication or successful redemption is claimed. No sponsorship, compensation or affiliate arrangement was supplied or used, and no affiliate links are included. Editorial approval and publication decisions are recorded separately in the article metadata.
