Tokenization Structures

Tokenized Treasuries and Funds

Distinguish a government security from a share in a vehicle holding government securities.

What you will learn

  • Distinguish direct debt from fund exposure
  • Read redemption and distribution terms

AI-assisted educational manuscript. No named product, current rate or eligibility is asserted.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish direct debt holdings from fund and intermediary exposure.
  • Separate an underlying bond maturity from a holder's exit terms.
  • Compare income, valuation, fees and redemption on the correct layer.

Treasury exposure is not one structure

A product associated with government debt can give its holder different interests: a direct debt security, a fund share, or a contractual claim against an intermediary. The underlying portfolio description does not determine which interest the holder owns. Investor.gov distinguishes bonds as debt securities and mutual funds as pooled portfolios issuing shares. Preserve that distinction when a token is added. SEC: Bonds, SEC: Mutual Funds

A treasury-linked token therefore needs a structure map: holder, issued interest, issuing entity, portfolio, custodian, valuation process, payment asset and exit process. The BIS framework explains why tokenization should be examined as an arrangement rather than a label attached to an asset. BIS

This chapter deliberately avoids a market yield quote. A date, currency, portfolio, fee layer and calculation method are necessary before any rate becomes comparable.

Worked example: a fund distribution and an exit

Imagine a fictional fund with 1,000,000 currency units of debt assets, 10,000 of liabilities and 100,000 shares. Its simplified per-share net asset value is (1,000,000 − 10,000) / 100,000 = 9.90.

During a teaching period, the portfolio receives 12,000 of interest. Expenses attributable to that period are 2,000. If all remaining income is distributed proportionally, a holder of 1,000 shares receives 10,000 × 1,000 / 100,000 = 100. This amount is not automatically an annual percentage yield; the example does not define a year, reinvestment or an investor's purchase price.

Suppose the portfolio includes a bond maturing next month, while the fund's assumed redemption process has a three-business-day notice and valuation rule. The bond's maturity is a portfolio event. The holder's redemption is a fund-level process. The holder cannot infer “cash tomorrow” from either a short portfolio maturity or an immediately transferable token.

Government debt cash flows → fund portfolio → expenses/valuation → fund holder
                                     │
                                     └→ custody and payment operations
Token transfer → possible secondary sale, if counterparties and rules permit
Fund redemption → separate request, valuation and payment process

The numerical example assumes no other changes. It is not a valuation or representation of any real fund.

Inspect the measurement layer

Distinguish portfolio yield, fund distribution rate and the holder's total return. A distribution can be positive while a fund share's value falls. Fees may occur within the portfolio, at the fund level, during currency conversion or on exit. Do not subtract a fee twice or omit it because it is not charged as a separate wallet transaction.

Check whether income changes the token balance, increases a reference value, or is paid in another asset. Those are different accounting and delivery mechanisms. None establishes a tax outcome. A displayed stable price also needs an explained valuation method and does not remove losses or suspension risk.

For evidence, retain the current offering documents, portfolio reporting date, expense schedule, eligibility terms and redemption procedure. Official documentation verification is distinct from successfully subscribing or redeeming. A research page must disclose which evidence level actually exists.

Common misconceptions

“Government debt exposure means I directly hold government bonds.” The holder may instead have a fund share or intermediary claim.

“Short maturity means instant liquidity.” Market access, notice, processing and payment conditions remain.

“A quoted portfolio yield is my net return.” Structure, fees, price changes, timing and currency can change the outcome.

Risks and limits

The cited U.S. education material supplies instrument concepts, not current rules for every government or fund. Interest-rate, credit, custody, liquidity and operational risks require product-specific evidence. Jurisdiction and investor residency must be verified separately; no token holder eligibility is inferred here.

Exercise and answer

Exercise: A fund holds 1,000,000 of assets, owes 10,000 and has 100,000 shares. Does “10 of assets per token” prove a 10 cash redemption amount?

Answer: No. Simplified NAV is 9.90, and the actual redemption amount and timing also require the fund's governing terms, valuation and payment evidence.

Continue through tokenization structures, and use markets and research lessons to build a dated comparison rather than a yield ranking.

sec-bonds, sec-funds and bis-tokenisation were retrieved as recorded on 2026-10-18. Their scopes are U.S. instrument education and international tokenization research. The fund, all amounts and its notice period are hypothetical. No rate, commercial fund or actual redemption was tested.

Check your understanding

Preparing knowledge-check controls…

What is simplified NAV with assets 1,000,000, liabilities 10,000 and 100,000 shares?

Your answer stays in this tab. No account or persistent completion record is created.
